Jay,

My compliments on a well written and objective article. I think you'll have your work cut out for you finding (old) contrail photos though. As a photographer I generally try to avoid including contrails in photos as it takes away from the natural feel of the pic. I would certainly make exception if the subject were aviation related though.

Perhaps you may be able to find historic aviation photos that would help. The NOAA also has a searchable photo database which may be able to help you out at http://www.photolib.noaa.gov/lb_images/searchit.html. They have a large archive of historic photos available as public domain.

By the way, I live near Albuquerque, New Mexico and on a few occasions have witnessed contrails from missile tests that ultimately looked like the missile must have flown around like a balloon with the air let out of it. On one occasion the contrails took on various colors which I attributed to diffraction as the morning suns first rays hit the ice crystals, something like a rainbow but not so dramatic. The missiles are occasionaly flown from Los Alamos Labs to White Sands Missile Range and the contrails are sometimes photographed as a feature photo in the local papers. You might try the Albuquerque Journal (www.abqjournal.com) if you're interested in that.

Hope I've been of some help,
