There is yet another way to connect the LCD unit to pic microcontroller (and of course to Atmel controller or pc) with several wires. You can use a shift register to send data to the Data port of the LCD - this means you need 2 pins - one for clock and one for the data sending to the LCD. And those 3 for control. This means 5 wires. You can even decrease the pins needed if you put 16-bit shift register (but the register must have Output Latch Enable signal! Reset line will be an advantage) and connect those 3 control lines to it. You can send all data by toggling the Clock line and setting meanwhile the Data line. When all data is clocked in you set Output Latch Enable and the data is latched to the output triggers (all lines at one time). That's all. Notice (1) that this is for unidirectional communication and (2) there is no problem to use 16-bit shift register for 8 data and 3 control lines (don't connect the other).
