I commiserate with all my friends in USA. I too had hoped for a better result. We in Australia have now had three successive wins by our conservatives at the federal level, while all states and territories are in the hands of non-conservatives (the Labor Party). Strange irony! It means on one hand that since most laws governing gay rights are in the hands of the states, we will see new big steps towards legal equality all over the country, following wonderful changes in my own state this year. On the other, our federal government is likely to take us all the way with USA on such issues as Iraq despite consistent public opposition to us being involved.

Please don't be too downhearted! A lot can happen in two years. Domestically, it is true, the conservative agenda will be advanced, but GWB cannot be sure of getting his way in the world. I remain the perpetual optimist!

I hope the hiatus in writing will be a brief one Drake!
