David:

I'm sorry to hear about your timing belt problem. I just had mine changed on my 2004.5 Spectra at almost the same mileage.

Did your Kia dealer explain why they think the belt was never changed? That is key part of conflict here. They have to be able to explain that to you.

Assuming that your story is legit, I've got the following thoughts/advice:

1. Where did you have the belt changed? If you live near that shop, can you have them verify your receipt's invoice number, and that they did perform the work on the documented date with Kia?

2. Is it possible that the repair place bamboozled you, said they changed the belt, and then took your money? If it was a small hole-in-the-wall or dumpy mom-n-pop place, then that is possibility. I'd doubt that a major dealership would pull that trick knowingly.

3. What's the receipt look like that you took in? Is it a professional invoice from a garage, or a "cocktail napkin" kind of receipt. If it isn't a professional receipt, it does get a bit harder to verify its legitimacy.

4. Finally... again, if everything's on the up-and-up with you, fight this with Kia corporate. The dealer may be lazy and not willing to go to effort of arguing on your behalf.

I will say this, for the benefit of others reading: From my own experience, and from what I've read online, Kia will stand behind their 10/100 drivetrain warranty, IF you play the game by the rules as far as doing required maintenance. If the belt change (or other required maint. for that matter) was performed by a non-Kia shop, Kia has all sorts of room to argue that the wrong part was used, a non-OEM part was used, the part was installed improperly, yada, yada. That would be true for any car make, btw.

I have made sure that all of the 'R' maintenance for my car has been performed by my Kia dealership, so that a record of it is their computers. Plus this eliminates any finger pointing by Kia that the service tech. was untrained, etc.

I have a good dealership that doesn't gouge too badly on the required maintenance. Sure I could have save a hundred bucks or even two going to a small garage on my 60k fluid and timing belt change, BUT... I look as that little extra $$ as an insurance policy on my warranty.

Good advice for ANY make of car, I think.

Let us know how it works out.
