Subject: Cycle helmets - on the battle lines

Cycling for fun is great ... speed, wind in your hair...freedom. As long as nothing goes wrong, it's wonderful.
I volunteer as an ambulance EMT ... I see the results. The cyclist can be completely in the right but when his cycle encounters a tree, a pole, a car or truck, or another cycle, he loses. He can lose his limbs, his brain, his ability to function or even his life. He pays and his family pays both financially and emotionally. The insurance currently required for a cyclist won't come anywhere near providing for the medical treatment and rehab he may require if he's in an accident and receives a head or neck injury.
I've run calls on countless cyclists, many of whom were innocent victims of someone else's carelessness - I've seen the pain they suffer. And I see the pain they continue to suffer as they go through months or years of rehab....or worse, are permanently housed in a medical facility.
And when their medical coverage ends...medicaid picks up the bill...and we pay medicaid.
Will a helmet always prevent injury? No, there are never any guarantees in life - but what a helmet does, is give you the best chance possible to avoid a debilitating injury.
Hopefully if your kid rides a bike, you insist on a helmet for him - doesn't it make sense that you wear a helmet too so you will be around to help him grow up?
Whether you ride a bike, skateboard, scooter , roller blades, an ATV or a motorcycle ... enjoy your sport, and play responsibily. Stay safe -it's good for all of us. I don't want to meet you 'by accident.'
