Subject: Hayes Unimpressed with Blades Start

While the season is still young, Yellowknife Blades GM knows all to well the importance of every game. It was only a few seasons ago, the Blades missed the playoffs by only a couple of points. It is this knowledge that has Hayes furious with the teams lackadaisical play thus far through the teams first eleven games.

The Blades are sitting right near the bottom of the conference with a 3-6-2 mark and have the second worst GAA in the entire GWHL.

"This defense has to be better. I will not tolerate this much longer" Hayes ranted.

Hayes had thought his teams defensive troubles may have been solved with the acquisition of star netminder Olaf Kolzig, but now realizes the problem has not been the goalies, it has been the team in front of them.

"Ollie has been playing decent hockey for us. He can certainly get better, but he has been good enough for us to win more games than we have been."

While the Blades have kept their core players over the past few seasons, Blades fans are getting the feeling that a major shakeup could be in the works.

Once thought of as untouchables, Blades longtime MVP Mike Modano, snipers Markus Naslund and Alexei Kovalev, Rod Brind'Amour, and even Shane Doan could be on their way out.

"I've stuck by this team and its core players for a long time" Hayes pointed out. "But unless I see some results fast, I can no longer safely say that our core players are untouchable."
