Quebec, PQ - The fans of the Montreal Marauders can finally take a breath. After starting the season 0-7-2 and burying themselves at the bottom of the standings, the team finally got its first win Sunday night in Montreal. More exciting, they followed with their second win Monday against an impressive Quebec team that is currently first in the conference.
"I'm relieved, for sure," said GM Sean Gallagher, "I was beginning to wonder if it'd ever happen. Of course, now we're still at the bottom of a huge hole."
Many fans are contributing the success to the arrival of a seasoned vet and a fresh-faced rookie. Dave Andreychuk was acquired this weekend from Saskatoon and immediately given the Captainship of the team. At the same time, rookie Adam Hall was called up from the minor leagues. The two paired with Greg Johnson on the fourth line. The line has given the team a boost, and Hall recorded his first professional goal.
However, while that may be a factor, one need only to look at the monster that has awoken on the top line. Todd Bertuzzi has pulled the team along offensively through their slow start, but the last two games were even more impressive. Tallying two goals and six assist for eight points, Big Bert has been the true catalyst for the Marauders.
What's even more amazing is his assists have been spread out among several players, helping to jump-start several forwards' seasons over the two days.
"Bertuzzi is just around the puck constantly right now," said coach John Tortorella, "he's pushing people around and creating space for everyone else out there. He's doing everything we expect of him. If his teammates cvan follow his example, we have a chance to fix this thing."
Montreal has a day off tomorrow before continuing on the Edmonton.
