Branberry woke up and sniffed. Her head was pounding and she felt terrible, but at least now she felt as though she could walk without falling over. Tenativly she stood up and was pleased to find that weak though her legs were, she didnt shake. She could hear the voices of Dreamer, Fox and Traveller outside the ditch. They had helped her. Branberry was grateful, but she was ashamed too. A full grown vixen like herself relying on others, two of which were younger than her. She looked over herself and her pride took a severe blow as she realised how terrible she looked. She thought back to her youth, which was a while ago. What a magnificent looking vixen she had been then! Thick dark red fur, a cream muzzle and chest and belly, a red throat. Glossy black ears and of course her unusually bright blue eyes. Even as she had aged, she had looked reasonable, if not remarkable. But now...Branberry sighed painfully. Her red coat was dull and missing chunks, exposing the flaky skin beneath. Her cream underside was smudged with mud despite her toiling during her illness. She was a rather vain vixen and it made her considerably miserable to look in such a state. Whats more, she was causing bother to her son, his mate and the famous Fox of farthing wood. The town vixen longed to grab her dignity back, but she knew she couldnt get out of the ditch and just trot away. Her friends would not allow it. They would insist on helping her, even if it meant disturbing their own lives. She grimaced as she remined herself that the whole point of leaving the dazzle of town and moving to this green dump was to find a mate. What chance had she now?
The vixen looked around. The ditch went a little way off. She thought for a moment. Perhaps it would seem ungrateful to go off on her own, but there was no way she could thank her friends without revealing her plans. Slowly, she tottered along the ditch. Her progress was slow and her limbs were starting to twitch again but she was absorbed with an idea and did not stop to think. She found a patch of undergrowth out of sight from where she had left Fox, Dreamer and Traveller and staggered out of the ditch, believing to be unseen.
