Dusk was near breakdown. Sunset was missing-he had left her to go hunting but now she had dissapeared and he feared the worst. He had a horrible feeling that she had either been hurt or had buckled under the pressure and ran. It wasnt a good thought that the only other fox ever to have put up with him had abandoned him, like his family tried to do. Plus, his sons were missing. Dusk threw himself beneath a tree. He looked terrible. He wasnt a young fox exactly, and his poor hunting skills and distracted mind had meant that he hadnt eaten for days. He gave a half hearted howl and lay down, feeling as though it were all over for him.
Thunder heard a howl and, keen to use his freedom, went to investigate. He recognised his father before Dusk had even noticed him. "DAD!" the young male barked, galloping over to his father.
Dusk stood up and ran at his son. They greeted eathother with delight and both started talking at once. "Wheres Mum?" "Wheres your brother?" "You look terrible!" "What happened?" Finally Dusk barked. "Lets go one at a time, my boy."
"Me first then," Thunder said quickly. "Where is Mum, why do you look so grotty and what happened when I got caught?"
Dusk scowled. He was a talkative animal and his own son had outtalked him. He was breifly proud too and began to explain.
"Trick came home and said you'd been doing some cub gang thing and had got captured. Me and your mother left him with a friend but he went after you. We've been wracking our brains to help. Then I left to look for you and now your mother...she...I...I think shes dissapeared."
Thunder looked worried. "She'll turn up Dad. I s'pose hunting is hard?"
Dusk nodded, glad his son hadnt pointed out that for him, hunting was hard even in mid spring. "What happended to you Thunder? Where's Trick?"
"Its a long story Dad," Thunder said, quickly explaining. "...and we escaped but got seperated so I dont know where Trick and Elegance went. But I found Aunt Stormy again. Ive adopted her as an aunt, Dad. She's really nice."
Dusk raised an eyebrow. "And its winter, isnt it?" Thunder missed the significance. "Yeah, of course its winter Dad. Thats what we call it when it snows loads. I left Stormy to go off chasing her new mate-to-be then found you."
Dusk sighed. The fact that it was winter made him miss his mate even more. "Well, lets go home boy," he said, starting off toward his den on the top of the stoney hill. But Thunder stayed still.
"Its about time I left home Dad," he said, getting straight to the point. "I reckon me and Trick are a bit big to live at home now. Besides, you and mum might want some more cubs."
The two foxes sat quietly, both thinking. Both were reluctant to just leave.
"Shall we call for company?" Dusk said after a while. His son nodded. Both foxes were missing friends and lovers and family. They both started to howl.
