Tasker eyed the rat hungrily....but hesitated. Was it right to take food from a strange fox he had never seen before? The older fox was looking at him expectedly, waiting for an answer.

As he tried to think of a response, the rat stayed where it was untouched. The smell was mouth-watering.He ducked his head, "They...umm..." Images came unbidden and he again saw two foxes, his parents, leaving him among the rocks and racing off into rising flames. HIs eyes filled with tears. Suddenly ashamed without another word, Tasker raced off, leaving the other fox watching his departure bewildered.

A short distance away, Tasker stopped to catch his breath and glanced back. The other fox was nowhere to be seen. He thought again of the food left behind and his mouth watered. Maybe he could go back later and look......
