Well. For starters, I can't pin a gender on it with any certainty. The biggest clue to its name is indubitably Soshi closing her eyes, but I have no idea what that means. Oh well. I got an impression of snakeness, probably from the tooth, but I can't find any evidence to back it up.

It's indubitably some spirt of Earth, slightly annoyed at being left behind. It could be a deity, but, on the other hand, "you would not be in my house if you were [dead]," so it could just be a monstrous being. I was thinking of Baba Yaga's hut when I read it, which of course is the wrong mythology.

Wait a minute, Soshi refers to it as "him" at one point, I'd forgotten that.

When I read the chapter I spent a little while looking for Mayan or Aztec deities with green eyes. I just spent a little time right now looking for one with any connection to language or writing. Neither of these searches yielded anything.

So, I don't really have a guess. Probably more a being of the Earth than of wisdom or learning. I'm just waiting to see. I suppose more details will be coming when you get to the High Priestess...

(Cloak of words! I love it. More, more! *grin*)
