Date Posted: 16:29:20 07/05/04 Mon The people bagging the refereeing standard on this site are kidding themselves... it's not surprising to see teams that are struggling cry foul over refereeing decisions... Berkeley are chronicly ill-disciplined yet every single week want to blame the referee... They spend more effort trying not to play by the rules then playing by them. Refereeing is surely not an easy gig and considering players can make up to 10 errors a game and no-one cares but if a ref makes one 50-50 call all hell breaks loose i think the critisism here is unfounded. The refereeing ranks are in fact reasonably strong in the illawarra... Several refs have been graded and others are a chance.. Of this years current crop i believe that Marcus Jennett, Craig Jones, Ben Everill, Liam Nicholls, Ryan Jackson and Andrew Astill are all in the junior representative squad... That is a fair effort. Jennett is probably the best referee in the comp when he is on his game. Dupille while still strong is relying on experience and cunning to get him thru matches these days... Riolo is probably well past his prime but is still competent... Yarrow is a real peoples person and isn't out of place in first grade Jones is an up and comer with plenty of potential... Everill is fast (maybe too fast for local league) and can let a game flow if given the chance... Astill is clear and concise and communicates well... Jackson is on his way up if he adjusts according to the game presented to him... Nicholls looks a referee but needs to show more authority... Yes all have flaws but the officials in this competition are actually of a high standard... Just go down to group 7 and watch a game there to see what it COULD be like... I think all of us spectators need to appreciate the referees...not Like them cause that will never happen, just realise that usually they see things better then we from the hill do.
