I was looking for something in the archives and ran across this question:

"You have probably crunched the numbers for this. Who will do more damage the fighter wielding a bastard sword two-handed or the same fighter wielding a greatsword? Does the longer threat range of the bastard sword make up for the greatsword's greater amount of base damage?"

I obviously overlooked it but now have an answer for you . . .

Maybe the SRD is faulty but both the Bastard Sword and the Great Sword have a 19/x2 threat range! So a great sword is clearly a superior damage weapon. ;)

If, however, you wanted a comparison between
Great Sword 2d6 - 19/x2
Great Axe 1d12 - 20/x3
Bastard Sword 1d10 - 19/x2

I can give you this -- With the same bonuses to hit, but with no strength bonuses, the damage ratio lies this way:

Great Sword -- 1
Great Axe -- .93
Bastard Sword -- .79

As strength bonuses increase however, the ratios tighten considerably. With an 18 strength:

Great Sword -- 1
Great Axe -- .96
Bastard Sword -- .88

With a 30 Strength:

Great Sword -- 1
Great Axe -- .98
Bastard Sword -- .93

Not surprisingly, the damage bonus from strength begins to completely override the other damage factors.

Hope this helps . . .
