Moonlit Walk

I stroll along these dark night roads,
crisp sharp air fills my lungs,
my breath I see as I walk a fast pace.
The moon lights up the whole sky.

I realize not the safest time to walk,
my friend walks along with me,
safety in numbers is what I've heard,
a stunned gun and cell phone just in case.

Together we encourage each other,
we push ourselves harder and further.
Then comes the pain in my calves,
shin splints she tells me to watch out for.

Circulation of blood through my body,
my mind and soul feels cleansed.
I hear many dogs bark as I walk,
the snow and ice crunch under my feet.

Headlights I see as cars pass me by.
I pass a house, someone is doing laundry,
the smell of fabric softener in the air
reminds me that mine awaits at home.

This two miles of exercise strengthens me,
my heart and muscles grow stronger,
a healthy body important to me now,
I feel refreshed and new with each step.

Finally we reach the corner where we part,
we say good job and head home.
Glad for the break away from my kids.
My soul feels free on this moonlit walk.
