Chapter 9 ~ A Changed Mind, and a Forgiving Heart

************************

There was a knock at the Lopez Fitzgerald’s door.

“Coming Noah,” Theresa answered.

Outside, Noah waited in his car wearing a pair of faded blue jeans and a tight fitted white T-shirt. His sunglasses were pulled up over his head letting his hair fall back. In the back seat was a box wrapped with blue paper and a yellow bow.

Theresa came out of the house wearing a yellow fitted sundress with a flowing skirt. She had her white cashmere sweater draped over her arm just in case it became cool later on.

“Hi Noah,” Theresa said softly.

“Hi,” Noah remarked. His voice low and husky.

Noah jumped out of his car and ran to the other side to open Theresa’s door. He greeted her with a kiss on the cheek and then allowed her to get in.

“Did you sleep well last night?” Noah asked as he pulled out of his parking space.

“I’m still having this strange dream like someone is out to get me. I don’t know why I would be having a dream like that. It has haunted me ever since you’ve been back in Harmony. I can’t seem to make out the faces in my dream either.”

Noah put his arm around her and told her not to worry. “It will pass.” He said, drawing close to their destination.

“Does your grandmother know we are coming today with a birthday present?”

“No! I thought it would be great to surprise her.”

“O.K. Noah. You know how elderly people are. She could have company that she wouldn’t want us to see.”

“Yeah, gramps could be getting her groove on.”

The couple laughed as they pulled up to the house.

Ethan pulled up to the Lopez Fitzgerald’s house and got out of his car. He rang the doorbell and waited for someone to answer.

Pilar came to the door and asked who was it.

“It’s Ethan Pilar, can I come in?”

“Oh master Crane,” Pilar said opening the door. “How can I help you?”

Ethan stepped inside and said, “I am dropping something off for my mother to give to Theresa, is she home?”

“No, Ethan, you just missed her. Her and Noah had some running around to do.”

Ethan dropped his head and said, “Oh, I see. Well would you make sure she gets this?”

“Sure Ethan, right away.” Pilar noticed that Ethan hadn’t been his cheery self since the day of Theresa’s party. “Ethan is it something bothering you. I’ve noticed how distant you’ve been since Mi hija’s party weeks ago.”

“Oh no Pilar I’m all right. I just…” Ethan put his hand to his face and rubbed around for a second.

“Mr. Crane please, come, sit down and have some lemonade.”

“Thank you Pilar, I appreciate it.”

Pilar went into the kitchen to get him a cool drink and Ethan walked over to the mantel where he saw a beautiful picture of Theresa. He said to himself as he picked the photograph up, “How could I have hurt you like that? How could I let you slip through my fingers? What can I do to make amends and let you love me again?”

Just then Pilar walked out of the kitchen with a glass in her hand. “Here you go Ethan. Please sit down.”

Ethan sat down on the sofa and took a sip.

“Ethan did something happen between you and my daughter?”

Ethan looked at Pilar in puzzlement. “What makes you say that Pilar?”

“Well for years my daughter spoke of nothing but you, and after her party, I’ve never heard her say your name since. I thought maybe you could shed some light on it.”

Ethan sat down his drink and said, “I did something to hurt her feelings and now she won’t speak to me.”

“Well it must have been very bad, because I’m aware of the feelings she has for you.”

“You mean she had for me.”

“No! I mean she has for you. Theresa may be with Noah but her heart is definitely with you. She may not say that, but I see her face every time she sees your picture in a magazine or on a news paper clipping. She lights up. If you want to reach her, speak to her from your heart. She’ll listen, I’m sure she will.”

“Thank you Pilar for understanding. I’m sorry I hurt her, but I promise I will make it up to her.” Ethan finished his drink, thanked Pilar for her hospitality, and left.

~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~

“Your grandmother really liked her present Noah. You are such a sweet grandson.”

“I think she liked seeing you more Theresa than she liked seeing me.”

“Noah don’t say that. You know you are your granny’s pride and joy.”

“I am aren’t I?”

Theresa leaned over and gave him a peck on the cheek. Noah parked the car in front of the book café and turned and faced Theresa. He took her hand and pulled her close. He leaned close to her to show her a real kiss, but as his lips touched hers, she pulled back.

“What is it Theresa? Are you afraid to kiss me?”

“No Noah it’s not that.”

“Well what is it? Ever since I’ve been back in Harmony you have been distant, like your mind is on something else. Or is it someone else?”

“I think we need to talk Noah. Let’s go inside.”

~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~

Ethan’s private phone rang. “Hello!” Ethan said out of breath.

“Hi darling. It’s Gwen, why are you so out of breath?”

“Oh hi Gwen. I just got in and ran up the stairs.”

“Ethan it seems like you need to work out darling,” Gwen said laughing.

“What’s up Gwen?”

“I was just wondering if you wanted me to pick you up tonight or are you coming to get me?”

“I’ll be there at 7P.M.”

“Great! Are we going to Calentures?”

“Sure, if that’s where you want to go.”

"Ethan is there something wrong?”

“I still haven’t been sleeping well lately.”

“Are you still having bad dreams that someone is trying to kill someone?”

“Yes, but I’ll be O.K.”

“I know darling, but I love you and I want everything to be all right.”

“I’ll be all right don’t worry.”

“Yes Ethan. I’ll see you tonight O.K?”

“Yes, bye Gwen.”

Ethan sat down on his bed and pulled out his wallet. He pulled out the number to Harmony’s florist shop and ordered a dozen of white roses. The card in the flowers said,

***
Loving you is so sublime.
Please forgive me, and help me fly again.

Love Ethan.
***

Ethan then pulled a picture out of that same wallet to reveal a happy Theresa. “I promise Theresa, I’ll make sure you look at me like that again one day.”

~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~

Noah looked at Theresa disappointedly. “I can’t believe you still have those childhood dreams about Ethan. Haven’t you grown out of that yet?”

“No I haven’t Noah. And I may never will.”

“Well that’s too bad Theresa. You know how much I love you and want to be with you. But I can’t compete with fate. And after all you’ve told me what has happened in the past year, it seems like you and Ethan should be together. I don’t usually give up so easily but you are so close in getting your dream to come true that I would love to see a happy ending. What can I do to help?”

Theresa smiled at Noah for being so understanding, crossed her arms and said, “I do believe that fate is back in my corner.”

When Theresa and Noah walked into her house, she saw the beautiful white roses on the front room table. “Oh mama who are these from?”

“Sorry Noah,” Pilar said, looking at Noah disappointedly.

“Read the card Teresa and you will know.”

“It’s O.K. Mrs. Lopez Fitzgerald. Theresa broke it down for me and I’m hoping everything works out for her.” Theresa read the beautiful words. Loving you is so sublime. Please forgive me and help me fly again. Love Ethan.

“Oh mama these are so beautiful. He does love me. I knew it.”

“Theresa did you think the flowers I sent you on your birthday were from Ethan?”

“Yes Noah, but I didn’t want to hurt your feelings.”

“Theresa, you can always be honest with me. We are friends before anything else. You just remember that.”

“I will Noah.” Theresa threw her arms around her friend and hugged him tight. Her fire was back and the sun shone through her smile that lit up the entire room around her. Noah, still hugging her, told her that he would pick her up around 7:15P.M. tonight.

“I’ll be ready.” Theresa replied.

“Sure you will.” Noah giggled, and left.

“Mama, I believe fate won’t be cruel to me tonight, I can feel it. Ethan will be in my arms before the night is over, that’s a promise.”
