Hi Camilla,

Thanks for your message and apologies that its taken a little while for me to write a reply.

In terms of self-teaching material, most pipers have used the Heather Clarke book which comes with a CD (New Approach to Uilleann Pipes - Price: £ 19.95) available from Hobgoblin Music. This book will get you started and seems to be the favourite for learning at home.

As for attending one of the SWAUP meetings, Camilla, you are more than welcome and newcomers are always made to feel at home. We are a very friendly bunch of people and please feel free to attend any of our meetings. I'm afraid that I can't offer a lift though because I am based in Bristol (soon relocating to Wales).

As for prices for the pipes, well, a decent practice set might cost somewhere in the region of several hundred pounds, a half set (with drones) in the region of a thousand pounds and a full set (with regs) can be several thousand pounds. However, I recommend buying a practice set at first to see how you get on with the pipes. There are pipe makers who have practice sets ready to sell and I am sure that the guys at our meetings will give you advice as to which maker to contact.

Hope that helps and look forward to meeting you at one of our gatherings.

With Kind Wishes

Steve Turner
