Yes, I agree that evil intent was never behind CP and I agree that insularity was a large part of the problem. But I don't think the community cared what society's attitude was. Back then they weren't trying to seem respectable

....they were, if anything, trying to sound as radical as possible. I remember that I delighted in shocking people with just how extreme I was. It was all about being different . . . and "not of the world"

However, I don't think the church was naive about this. Individuals didn't know what was going on outside (or didn't care, if they did) but leaders had a keen awareness. I say that because I remember that in the 1983 election we were encouraged to vote conservative because of fears that Labour would take our children away.
