-from 1956 to 1977 & beyond he was a popular idol
*Rock'n'Roll's Black Roots
-early white rock music drew from black rhythm & blues traditions
-Buddy Holly & Bill Haley made it in the rock'n'Roll scene too
-rock drew from:country western,gospel& jazz music
-1950's a growth popularity of African-American bands/singers
-popularity of rock owed it to radio & T.V.
-early 1950 disk jockeys came out
-American Bandstand/showcase for rock'n'roll hits
-helped spread rock'n'roll
-T.V. & radio encouraged sale of records
-teenagers used jukeboxes whenever they could & bought 45 rmp
-1954 & 1960 sale of records increased from $182 million to $521 million
*"Payola" Scandals
-payola: is where promoters would pay disk jockeys/stations to play thier artist

Decline of McCarthyism
-by 1954 crusade against communism started to have popular opposition
-clearest signal of change was the political demise of Senator Joseph McCarthy
-Jan. 1954 McCarthy attacked Secretary of the Army Robert Stevens & armed services in general
-influential members of Congress organized investigations called Army-McCarthy hearings
-the hearings were nationally televised
-public saw McCarthy as a villian & even a buffoon
-Dec. 1954 Senate voted 67 to 22 to condemn him
-3 yrs. later he died

U-2 Crisis
-Nov. 1958 Nikita Khrushchev took over as Soviet premier
-he demanded that NATO abandon West Berlin
-NATO said NO
-Soviets wanted a sit down w/ U.S.
-Soviet Union announced thatn it had shot down an U.S. U-2 spy plane over Soviet territory
-its pilot was in captivity
-Soviets cancelled the sit down
-After 8 yrs. Eisenhower failed to stop but actually incresed tensions between Soviet Union
-he resisted military intervention in Veitnam
-he called for caution in domestic & international affairs
-his successors argued that U.S. needed to be more agressive on behalf of its goals @ home & abroad
