Postwar Computer Technology
-computers had been constructed mainly to perform complicated mathematical tasks
-1950's began perform commercial functions/data-processing devices used by businesses & other organizations
*UNIVAC
-1st significant computer of 1950's
-1st to handle both alphabetical & numerical information
-Remington Rand used UNIVAC to predict the result of 1952 election for CBS television news
-accurately predicticted an enormous landslide victory for Eisenhower over Stevenson
-Remington Rand had no luck in marketing UNIVAC
-IBM then came out w/ 1st major data processing computers & found a market for it in businesses & abroad
-IBM had an early success
-IBM invested in research & development which made the company a worldwide leader for amny yrs.

Birth of Television
-commercial t.v. began after WWII
-1946 only 17,000 sets/ by 1957 there was 40 million sets
-more people had t.v.'s then refrigerators
-3 major networks emerged: NBC,CBS,ABC
-T.V. stations needed advertisers
-early shows had names of their corporations
-also soap operas became popular(appealed to a women audience)
*Social Consequences of Television
-by late 1950's t.v. replaced newspapers,magazines,& radios
-T.V. advertising helped create a market for new fashion & products
-sports became American important source of entertainment
*Television's Homogenizing Message
-programs gave an image of American life: white,middle-class,& suburban
-by programs: Ozzie & Harriet & Leave it to Beaver
-these programs reinforced gender roles
