-by computer technology there was explosive growth in genetics
-genetic engineering through which new medical treatments and new techniques for hybridization of plants/animals have already become possible
*Human Genome Project
-scientist began to identify specific genes in humans and other living things that determine particular traits
-how to learn how to alter or reproduce them
-the project would try to identify over 100,000 genes by 2005 but 2003 will finish it
-1997 scientist in Scotland cloned a sheep named DOLLY
*DNA
-identifiable as a fingerprint
-identify individuals through blood, semen, skin, or even hair
-played it’s 1st major role in O.J. trial
-identified the Thomas Jefferson fathered a child of a slave
-also used in the Monica Lewinsky scandal
*Downside of Genetics
-people fear scientists predictions
-their ability to alter aspects of life
-some sees it as interfering with God’s plan
*Moral and Ethnic Dilemmas
-anti-abortion advocates denounced the research, claiming that in vitro fertilization exploited un-born children
-some say they use stem-cells form discarded fetuses from in vitro fertilization
-these controversy became an issue of George W. Bush’s campaigned
-he issued a ruling baring the use of federal funds to support research using any stem cells
