This is exactly the sort of thing I complain about here in Brazil, always pointing out that our system isn't like that. If Britain doesn't give a damn about democracy, then who the hell is going to? That’s precisely why they’re doing it. “Why in the name of Bruce don't you people form a plausible alternative to Blair?” I find the Conservatives plausible, it's just the media that does not. If Blair gets in again, I would be surprised if we do not have our own El Presidente by the end of the decade. With regard to the eradication of our heritage and symbols, the Government also wants to remove the word Crown from the Crown Prosecution Service. The Serious Organised Crime Agency, or SOCA as it is being called, will take over the law enforcement responsibilities of HM Customs and Excise. Therefore, they will probably disappear too eventually. The Parliament of the People’s Republic of Alba yesterday approved the changes to Britain’s legal system. The House of Lords is being replaced by a “Supreme Court” as the final civil court of appeal in the UK. It sounds very continental doesn’t it? [ Post a Reply to This Message ] |

Date Posted: 12:48:35 01/20/05 Thu The problem with the Conservative attitude to the EU is that their party is not united on the issue. I feel they are as skeptical about the EU as they feel they can get away with, without a number of MPs crossing the floor like the idiot whose name escapes me did this week. You would then have the has-beens of Heseltine and Clarke (who despite being collectively responsible for the Conservatives most unpopular policies in the last Government, seem to be held in high esteem by the media) polluting the airwaves with their Europhile nonsense, and creating more damage to the party. Despite the fact that they seem to be between a rock and a hard place, I agree that they should come off the fence and declare that a referendum on withdrawal from the EU would be undertaken, should they form a Government. This would put the UKIP threat out of business, and would force those undecided Britons into a choice between a Federal Europe, or out of Europe. I think this would be a positive psychological development amongst the electorate. Their policy of “In Europe, not run by Europe” is contradictory, unachievable, and frankly farcical. I believe they know this, but they are too scared of the Labour propaganda machine to come out and say so. [ Post a Reply to This Message ] |
