Date Posted: 15:21:56 01/15/05 Sat Oh fer cryin' out loud. I'm all for recognition of dialects but, like Rabbie Burns or Irvine Welsh, I jis cannae unnerstan it! It sounds more like Scottie than Scots and I'm wondering just how much some numptie was paid to write it. Given that the people who may actually understand the dialect can hardly read (1 in 5 adults is illiterate in Scotland) - what was the point? Bet you it was the SNP! What next? BBC News wi' pure mental subtitles fer the weegies? Or how about Chewin' the Fat's BBC News with translations for the Neds? [ Post a Reply to This Message ] |

Date Posted: 19:49:38 01/15/05 Sat My ancestors were Scots, so the suggestion of bigotry sounds like nonsense to me. The whole idea of the Federal Commonwealth Society is that we don't see each other as foreigners. Whether we be from Queensland, Scotland, New Zealand or Newfoundland, we are all part of the same family. I was merely pointing out that spelling Australian English phonetically and using slightly different grammar and vocabulary does not make it a distinct language. I find it comical, is all. Date Posted: 20:03:19 01/15/05 Sat Even if you speak The Queen's English it is not spelled phonetically, so why attempt to spell it phonetically for other dialects? Are we so patronising as to suggest that people outside MFB (that's Mayfair, Fitzrovia, Bloomsbury to you scumbag provincials) are so stupid that they can not be expected to understand language which is not "spelled the way it sounds" as we can? In my opinion, that is the height of prejudice: insisting that people who speak regional dialects are unable to spell properly is narrow-minded and snobbish. [ Post a Reply to This Message ] |
