In reply to: Jim (Canada) 's message, "Canadian Red Ensign" on 17:24:46 11/11/04 Thu

I am glad to hear it.

Although it would be irony indeed if Canada were to bring back an ensign just as Australia got rid of theirs... replacing it, perhaps, with some yellow and green thing with a kangaroo on it.

Having said that, I rather like the Aboriginal flag... reminds me rather of the Kenyan one.

Even a large number of republicans in Australia want to keep the flag as it is.

I was unaware of that. Mind you, Fiji recently became a republic and left the Commonwealth, and decided to keep the Jack on its flag nonetheless. In this context, I suppose that there is no reason why Australia should not do the same.

Having said that, I would prefer for Australia not to become a republic AND keep the ensign!

True.

It is only really extremists like Mark Latham who are against the Australian flag. Mark Latham's predecessor as leader of the ALP supported the Australian flag. In addition, under legislation introduced by the Howard government when it was first elected, Australia must hold a referendum in order to change its flag. This is very unlikely to happen as recent polls have shown very strong support for the Australian flag.
