Date Posted: 18:20:41 11/11/04 Thu I was unaware of that. Mind you, Fiji recently became a republic and left the Commonwealth, and decided to keep the Jack on its flag nonetheless. In this context, I suppose that there is no reason why Australia should not do the same. Having said that, I would prefer for Australia not to become a republic AND keep the ensign! Date Posted: 07:44:19 11/13/04 Sat True. It is only really extremists like Mark Latham who are against the Australian flag. Mark Latham's predecessor as leader of the ALP supported the Australian flag. In addition, under legislation introduced by the Howard government when it was first elected, Australia must hold a referendum in order to change its flag. This is very unlikely to happen as recent polls have shown very strong support for the Australian flag. [ Post a Reply to This Message ] |
