] Date Posted: 20:59:53 11/10/04 Wed Tomorrow will see our annual remembrance of that decisive moment in our history, Armistice Day. On the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month, four years of unadulterated slaughter was brought to an end, and peace was brought to our continent for a brief two decades. We all mark this day to reflect on the sacrifice of our forebears to preserve our values and way of life. I would like to pay tribute to the men and women of the armed forces of the commonwealth, for their significant and resounding contribution they have made to our nations over the years, and to offer my heartfelt thanks to them. Their contribution to democracy over tyranny is especially poignant this year, as soldiers from the UK and Australia are once again in harms way. We will remember them. Date Posted: 14:31:05 11/11/04 Thu Does anyone know if the service at the Cenotaph is on November 11th (today) or this coming Remembrance Sunday (Nov 14th)? I should like to go along to show my respects since I'm in the UK this week, but if it was this morning rather than Sunday I have missed it, owing to being on trains etc. [ Post a Reply to This Message ] |

Date Posted: 17:56:46 11/11/04 Thu The Queen led an estimated 45 million of us in a two minutes' silence at 11am this morning. “All locomotion should cease, so that, in perfect stillness, the thoughts of everyone may be concentrated on reverent remembrance of the glorious dead” - King George V, 1919 After that, the Thames was lit up red and will remain that way until the full remembrance ceremony takes place on Sunday. Date Posted: 18:17:57 11/11/04 Thu I must wander down to the Thames to see that. Golly, this place is better than my usual place of domicile. I observed the silence this morning, and not only because Radio 4 suddenly stopped broadcasting and played 2 minutes' silence over the radio... [ Post a Reply to This Message ] |
