Subject: Club length

Hi David and forum members,

I'm 6.2ft and my w-t-f was 36.9" however I'm concerned that my new 1Iron clubs will be too long as I'm not a great striker of my 6 iron and prefer shorter clubs played closer to my body - 9 iron I always hit clean and accurate. My question is could I go for shorter clubs ie 8 or 9 iron length taking into account my w-t-f measurement and would this be a good idea? Any feedback from people who have experimented with shorter lengths would be appreciated.

Thank you

Bernard

I made the mistake of "second guessing" Mr. Lake's fitting formula because I "knew better" - I didn't! The first set I purchased was a #9 iron club length since that was a great club for me. The set worked well but I didn't get the results I was looking for. I called Mr. Lake and told him what I had done and he very kindly told me that I had made a huge error by not ordering strictly based on my W-T-F measurement. I purchased a second set that actually fit me properly (a #5 iron club length) and the difference was nothing short of amazing. My ball striking looked like a pro's after only one trip to the range.

Bernard: I highly recommend staying with 1-Irons that actually fit your WTF of 36.9", which in this case will be approximately the length of a standard 6 or 7 iron. The reason is simple: the 1-Irons will have a more "upright" lie angle of about 63.5*, which is the same as your old 8 or 9 iron. Hence, you will be able to play them closer to your body, similar to your old 8 or 9 iron. Your old 6-iorn has a lie angle of about 61*, and must be played farther away from your body. Several of my students play the 1-Irons, and have not had success doing what you are wanting to do. Stay with what David recommends and you won't go wrong! Take care, r2

I had the same concerns as you did. My WTF measurement is 38.25". My favorite club was a full inch shorter than the recommended length. I took a deep breath and ordered the recommended length set. Although I have had them for less than two weeks, I am glad I put my faith in David Lake's principles.
