Subject: 3,4 iron or 5,7 wood

I'm currently playing the Sterling single length irons. They were custom built for me a little over 2 years ago. However, the club builders electronic range device wouldn't allow for single length irons. So during the gapping session, he was guessing as to the tweaks he had to make. The result is 5-7 yard gapping on some clubs and 15 yard gapping on others. The lie angle was adjusted on all the clubs, but I constantly fight from going left on some of the clubs. It's either in my grip or the clubs are too upright or to long (37") I think.
Anyhow, I'm trying to decide between the Proline with a little stronger loft vs the Blackstones. I'm 70, with bad shoulders, but still have an ok swing. Drives are 210, 3 wood 180, 7 wood 165. Currently a 12 hcp.
When I got the Sterlings, I got a 4 iron with them. Well 2 years later, I've dropped the 4 iron, thinking about dropping the 5 and have gotten a 3,4 & 5 hybrid but have a hard time holding greens with the hybrids. I get a tremendous amount of height from the 8-gw. 5,6 & 7 are starting to get lower, but the distance is about the same as the 1st day. 135 7, 145 6, 160 5 with roll out no longer stops.
I'm leaning towards the driver, 3,5,7 fairway woods and 5-lw of the proline to eek out a few more yards. On a few of your comments that you have made in the past about the 3,4 being so easy to hit, based on the info I provided, what would you suggest?
3,4 iron or fairway woods? Proline for a little more distance or Blackstone for height. I'm asking because I can't find anywhere anything about the comparison of the ball flight and distance of the two.
Thanks for your time and Merry Christmas

Ron,

Comparing loft angle to loft angle between the Blackstone and Pro-line irons, there is no difference in distance or trajectory. Obviously, a lower loft angle will produce increased distance and a lower trajectory. Other than individual loft angles, they have exactly the same specs and weight distribution.

I am also 70 years old and have been playing the Blackstone irons 19º through 59º, along with the #3 wood and driver for over five years. It is simply a matter of personal preference in the choice of the #5 and #7 wood as opposed to the 19º and 23º irons. I will say that you would have to try to miss-hit the fairway woods, and if you have bad shoulders, as you mention, this is probably the way to go.

Merry Christmas to you and your family.

David Lake

Thank you for the reply. I believe that is the way I'm going to go.
Driver, 3,5,7 woods and the Blackstone irons.
Thanks again and Merry Christmas.
