Mr. Lake, I've read you don't believe there have been significant changes in iron tech over the last 20+ years. I'm curious on your thoughts on hollow body iron design... fairly new tech that has taken over the big brands' iron lineups. I think the most apple to apple example is comparing One Iron Golf to Wishon/Sterling Golf. The first set of Sterling one length irons were cavity backs similar to One Iron Golf's cavity backs. Their new set of Wishon one length irons are hollow body design
1. What do you think about hollow body design?
2. Do you plan on making a hollow body design option?

I have another question that is along these same lines - what are your thought on the new "player's distance" iron category. I'd say the best comparison here is Cobra's forged tec one length option. Do you have any intention of adding a payer's distance iron to your lineup?... or adding a player's iron to your lineup?

A hollow body iron is strictly marketing hype and not based upon any performance factors. If there were any truth in it then all brands and lines of irons would switch to this. Believe me - strictly marketing.

You will note in the specs of the Cobra King Forged Tec One Length irons that the lie angles varies throughout the set while club length remains the same. This results in a complete miss-match between lie angle and club length requiring you to use a different swing posture and swing plane with each iron. This is where Cobra completely ignores the concept of single-length play and tries to create a weird hybrid that appeals to those who prefer conventional irons.

As far as their muscle back design, better players definitely do not prefer this design over a cavity back. To my knowledge, there is no pro on tour who plays muscle back irons and hasn't been since the introduction of cavity back irons. Whereas cavity back irons produce an extreme level of forgiveness on off-center hits which benefits the better player as well as the high handicapper, muscle back irons produce much less consistent solid ball striking and far less accuracy.

Maybe I’m using the terminology incorrectly
Titleist T200, TaylorMade P790, Callaway Apex, Ping G425… are these not hollow body designs?
Titleist T100 are the most played iron on tour - are these not muscle backs?

Trent,

The T100 are cavity back. Tungsten weighting at the base on either side of the back cavity and perimeter weighting around the sides and top. The same is true of the other irons you mention. There is a shell on the back that covers the internal perimeter weighted cavity which they all incorporate. These are not "hollow body" designs, but rather, simply a covered cavity.
