Subject: "a storm like a type 2 hurricane" is not a hurricane, bev. A hurricane must, by definition, be a tropical depression....

...sorry, it might have been a windy storm, but it was not a hurricane. I had a storm front move through my meighborhood two weeks ago that clocked speeds in excess of 80 mph. However, it was not a hurricane.

I've recently noticed the same confusion by the meteorologically challenged with regards to Subtropical Storm Andrea. Those hoping for a above average hurricane season this year, which is rather sick when you think about it, are trying to hail it as the the first named hurricane of the season.

But was not a hurricane, it was a "subtropical depression"! An entirely different beast that does not qualify as a hurricane.

And the only reason it even has a name is because in 2002 the National Hurricane Center decided, for whatever reason, to start naming subtropical storms.

Which probably accounts for a fair share of the increased number of "hurricanes" eco-twerps are constantly citing.
