That's what i mean by initiative... I don't think many freshers would do all this, or even ask for help. Of course there are some enthusiastic people like you who got everything done themselves right from the start. But having a support structure in place ensures that Oxford turns out 25+ pretty decent beginner couples every year, and not just 2 or 3 who start out being incredibly keen.

I don't know... for a start i don't think anyone goes out there to scare others, maybe to try to impress the judges. But I don't think that the open circuit is any less scary. I suppose I've never seen an event with significant numbers of entries in the lower levels, so I can't really compare it, but the amateurs seem much more scary and serious than anyone ever seen on the uni-circuit.

I actually find the uni-circuit very friendly and know people from quite a few teams that i'd say hello to and have a chat with during a competition day, but i suppose i'm starting to go towards the "veteran" group, so that might not be typical :).

Do you have any ideas how to make the comps appear less scary to new people? I always thought it would help if people got to know each other better, but it's hard to legislate that :), inter-university events might help though...
