Well, I have faith that the Coaches knew what they are doing in recruitng Tristan Parham, a JUCO guy who averaged 6 and 4. He has to be a match-up type role player. His description at the Coffeyville website dscussed his potential and inferred he hasn't realized it yet. The press release indicated that the recruiting search for the Broncos isn't over yet. Let's hope it ends with a splash.
As for next year... If one assumes that the Broncos will improve some, 18 wins isn't a stretch, and we sure can hope for more.

[> [> Coffeyville Coach's description of Parham from school website -- JCard, 21:20:26 04/22/04 Thu

Tristan Parham
6-8 Sophomore Forward
Chicago, Illinois

"Tree" is a versatile forward who can score both inside and out while being the tallest member of this year's Raven basketball team.

He came to CCC a year ago after gaining second-team all-area honors in Chicago while playing at Thornridge High School.

"Tristan must play physical and aggressively while still using his athleticism to be completely effective for the Ravens," Coach Jay Herkelman said. "He has great potential, but that potential needs to become a reality this season."

[> [> Congratulations to Mr. Parham -- Bronco66, 13:43:16 04/23/04 Fri

it's good to know that we can recruit in the middle of the country and that (I would guess) LP's trip to Kansas was not in vain.

"Tree" looks like someone who will grow well in the Santa Clara Valley !!!

seems like he had a small injury in his senior HS year that may have been the reason he wound up at Coffeyville rather than Ind. St.

Recruiting News & Rumors From Illinois

We have also heard from very reliable sources that Indiana State coach Royce
Waltman is about to secure the Sycamores' third early commitment for 2002, this
one from 6-7 PF Tristan
Parham of Dolton (Thornridge). In fact it may happen this week.

Parham is one of the most underrated seniors in Illinois, and a player
who had a terrific summer, raising his national stock for Darryl Royster's AAU
team. Tristan played very well in Orlando at the 17-under national AAU's.

while apparently not a Starter at Coffeyville he has some numbers:

This is a very underwhelming signing especially after the hype on these boards about a big JUCO player from the midwest ... I think we all thought it would be someone with the credentials of J.R. Patrick and hopefully better health. This kid sounds like a body off the bench with 5 fouls to burn.

[> [> [> Granted GoBroncs -- Bronco66, 16:09:33 04/24/04 Sat

Tristan doesn't come in as a heralded JC AA ... and JR was a great get in terms of a quality individual who if able to play full strength both seasons would have made the Broncos a team to be reconded with ....

all that being said I have to give the coaches their due ... I know that LP made at least one trip to see Tristan play ... and although he was off the bench he did play in a really tough league, for a really good team and lead that team in Blocks with limited time ... his 12 minutes in the Regional semis were against the ZAG's JUCO they are so high on ... and Mr. B was for all intents and purposes shutdown by Tristan's team ... don't know what defense he brings but I am sure it is some ...

his rebounds in that game were OFFENSIVE and Mr. B was surely in there when that happened (Batista played 39 min) and although "Tree"'s not a very good FT shooter (and probably has no 3PT game) he seems to be able to find the basket when it counts and takes the "high percentage" shots ... and Lord knows we could have used that more than a couple of times this past year ...

so maybe he's not the "MAN" we (and every program in America) would love to see ... I'm hoping he can contribute and with Perkins and Travis I am liking the hussle factor he most likely can contribute ...

we definitely need consistant point production ... at least from someone EVERY night ... and like others have mentioned a "true" PG ...

I'm no talent "scout" ... although I may know it when I see it displayed ... actually I would like to get to see a little more of Graham Neuberger ... yah he at times looked a little (or a lot) lost out there but in the end of (I think) the USF tourney game he had some flashes of true gym-rat style ... a rebound, and an assist (should have had two except for a defensive foul) and all in a couple of minutes ... and seemingly more speed than Kyle ...

what say you all ???

[> [> [> [> it's tough to say -- Bronco66, 19:23:09 04/25/04 Sun

Hard to find complete stats on Tristan or the Coffeyville Ravens ...

but like you say 6ppg in JC is not a lot ... must be some reason the coaches were willing to go to Kansas for a player

from what I can find it appears that Tristan was mostly??? a role??? player (non-starter with about 10-12 minutes of PT) he did have multiple double-digit scoring games (at least four) and led or shared scoring honor on at least a couple of occasions ... on a couple of occasions he scored the go-ahead baskets in come-from-behind wins ...

at 6-8 he was the tallest member of his team so I would imagine his "role" at SCU will be different than at Coffeyville ... which did place 5th in the National JC tourney ... so this was no slouch team he was playing on ... and behind slouch players

I am guessing that there is more here than 6ppg and 5 fouls it appears his numbers are about the same as Jim Howell's in about half the time (the only negative were the about 3 PF's per game in limited minutes) ... I would say that is something that was part of the role ... or the reason he didn't get as much PT ... in either case that might be part of what needs to be worked on ... but personally I would prefer to have a Travis back down a bit than try and "teach" someone to be more aggressive ... if he can produce say 12ppg & 8rbs in 20-25 min that would be very nice

from David Kiefer's article last November about getting Doron Perkins: (http://www.mercurynews.com/mld/mercurynews/sports/colleges/santa_clara/7316939.htm?template=contentModules/printstory.jsp)

Rather than waste his time trying to land the elite, Davey looks for ``a player with a high level of competitive spirit. We're not going to recruit a superstar,'' he said, ``but maybe a guy who's been overlooked a little bit and can develop into a good player.''

I'm all for being realistic but that doesn't mean I have to like the idea of us wasting 2 years's scholarship on a kid who scored 6 points/game in JuCo last year. I too hope he proves us wrong and I wish him well and a good education just as much as everyone else.

But this sounds like a lame signing.

Perkins was a great pickup, who also averaged 25 ppg in JUCO. Parham is reminicent of Linden Tibbets: non -starter, very succesful HS school program, single digit ppg and rpg. After 2 seasons and three years at SCU, Linden (who appears to be the most athletic of the bronco bigs) seems to be coming around. We'll see if the promise he showed in the last few games is more than illusory. Parham only has 2 years and needs to contribute immediately. Granted, he was on a team that has 4-6 Div 1 players on it in one of the toughest JUCO regions in the country, but with Perkins and Bailey graduating next year,6 and 4 in JUCO does not get you excited. Immediate front court help on both sides of the court is key. Hopefully Henke,TP, Denison et al can provide it. The coaches are still out beating the bushes to find some more players. All in all the recruiting class isn't bad. Henke and Angley are potential starters; one more "impact" recruit and the class would have to be consisidered a success (at least on paper). The proof will be in the record.

[> [> [> [> [> Nice Analysis JCARD -- Bronco66, 21:58:15 04/26/04 Mon

I will admit I try and look for the bright side ... Doron was a great addition ... and not exactly what I had expected (or hoped) ... DD's analysis of him as I believe someone who scores but not a "shooter" is very apt ... I had hoped he was bringing that Zaga "rainbow" 3 type of shot that we haven't seen much of lately ... (a Kyle Bankhead if you will) .... but what he does bring is very good ... thank you very much ....

and while TP doesn't apparently have the Kikert/Nowitski(sp?) outside game that we will somewhat loose with JR's leaving it would be nice to have another BIG capable of double digit production ...

face it this year Travis I believe was #3 at around 9ppg

so as we all painfully are aware ... a couple more timely points in several games this year and were looking mighty pretty ....

so excited about 6&4 .... no way ... looking forward to two more bigs that can score (TP and Henke) and like to BANG ??? ... yah that's worth looking forward to ....

and YES the Gods of balanced league play ... some nice outside play would be very welcomed ... a few more dishes to our "scoring" inside guys ... and a few more PCT points on the outside shots ... from whoever ...

one more quality player ...

yes its a long time till HOOPS ... and the spring thaw is about over ... (been working a lot lately so the posting time has lagged)

yes I am "optimistic" and proud of it ... and I think we have the talent to win more than our share of games as long as the "traditional"??? Bronco over-achievers step up ...

it looks like Pepp has Once Again sewn up the Commissioner's Cup ... with their balanced athletic program and ability to "recruit" star individual sport (tennis, golf) candidates to the Malibu Campus ... tough to compete against that ... (but that's fodder for another thread)

(none the less) nice showing this "spring" from Woman's Tennis, Golf and Crew ... and a some "gutsy" performances from the men in Tennis as well ... (again more fodder)

and OB "the Nephew"'s teams continue to show flashes of breaking through ... perhaps the "crown jewel" of the new "take it to the next level" Broncos it still seems that a few more years will be necessary before the "Return to Omaha" ... but still a nice job and worth going out to the 'old' ballyard ... before it is replaced ... (nice outing against the Cardinal guys) ....

so speaking of more fodder ... how about a new set of threads ... let,s size up the 04-05 WCC competition ...

perhaps we start with the pussycats of Westchester???
(see elsewhere)

[> Okey Mbanugo is a Bronco... -- JCard, 14:36:43 05/01/04 Sat

Eagles' Mbanugo set to be a Bronco
Santa Clara awards scholarship to American star

By Steve R. Waterhouse, STAFF WRITER
Argus Online

FREMONT -- It seems like just yesterday American High boys basketball player Okey Mbanugo made his permanent residence in Fremont.

But in all actuality it's been nearly four years since he moved here from Nigeria.

And in those four years, two at the varsity level, Mbanugo has turned into one of the Mission Valley Athletic League's top centers.

Today, the 6-foot-81/2 center will sign officially with Santa Clara. He's already verbally accepted a scholarship offer and is just waiting to sign on the dotted line.

"I think he's going to get so much better," American coach Steve Kline said. "He's going to learn an awful lot."

When Mbanugo began playing basketball at American, he was just tall, with nearly no skills. Kline said he could barely catch the ball when he first got here.

Four years later and with a scholarship in hand, this All-MVAL first-teamer is striving to make a name for himself in the basketball world.

"I always knew I was a Division I player," Mbanugo said. "I didn't get that much publicity so no one really heard of me."

It was thought, for most of the year, that Mbanugo was too raw to play at the Division I level, that junior college was going to be his destination. But then came a late charge by Bowling Green, Santa Clara and San Jose State.

"All three were here (Wednesday night) at open gym," Kline said. "Santa Clara came to about three games this year that weren't his best, but they saw film on him. It seems everything happened in the last two weeks."

Mbanugo averaged 10 points and 10 rebounds last season as the Eagles went 15-11 overall and 5-7 in league play.

"It would have been nice to make NCS (North Coast Section) playoffs," Mbanugo said. "but overall it was a good year."

Both of Mbanugo's parents are from Nigeria, though they're now divorced. And while his mom has made a permanent residence in Fremont, his dad still lives in Nigeria.

As a kid, Mbanugo split time between Nigeria, where he lived with his aunt, and Fremont. His first trip to Fremont came when he was just a week old. Then in 2000, his permanent home became Fremont, where he lives with his mom.

Mbanugo downplays the route to Fremont, which now leads to endless possibilities at Santa Clara.

"It wasn't difficult,," Mbanugo said of the transition. "Where I used to live it was nearly the same. I mean the they're not up to speed technology-wise, but we're about the same."

Mbanugo isn't sure if he'll redshirt next year.

"It's still up in the air right now," Mbanugo said.

JCard thought:
This more understandable than Parham...Rivals.com decribes Mbanugo as a compelling combination of "size and athleticism", and while raw he has 4-5 years of upside. With Parham in the fold, I suspect that a redshirt year is a almost assured. From the article he progressed a lot at American; I'm betting we see a quantam improvement in Mr. Mbanugo during his SCU tenure as well. FOr the long haul i like this pick up; This also means we dance with "what brung us" for next year along with Messers. Henke, Parham and Angley.

[> [> Re: Okey Mbanugo is a Bronco... -- gobroncs, 20:06:25 05/02/04 Sun

Seems like a decent recruit. He may be a project but any kid who averages 10 boards in 32 minute HS games clearly has some immediate value.

In retrospect, a recruiting class is evaluated on how the best 1-2 kids turn out, not the average of 4-5 guys. Since Henke seems to be a legit star in the making and Angley good too, this could turn out to be a decent class.

As for next season, it's difficult to see any substantial improvement from this year. I doubt any of these kids will be a major impact next year. Our depth chart looks like:

PG: Bailey (how we do next year depends most on how Bailey, who plays the most important position does ... hopefully better than his bad stretchs of last year and I pray he learns to stop shooting so darn much.) Angley seems likely to get 5-10 minutes as his back up and start the next year.

Wing: Perkins, Rohe, Rohde, Dougherty. I like this group a lot. Perkins is great, and a healthier Rohe can be dangerous. Rohde is solid and Dougherty is a sleeper.

Bigs: Nieson, Denison, Legge, Borchardt, Tibbets, Parham. Nice depth here and we'll need it. The key is for someone bigger that Nieson to develop as a go-to guy. That means Denison or maybe Borchardt, who always looks like a player to me.

I'm not sure where Henke fits in as I forget how tall he is. Overall we should be fine but not great ... a very typical Santa Clara team.

[ Edit | View ]

[> [> [> Next year -- JCard, 23:03:02 05/02/04 Sun

Can't disagree with your analysis much. Henke is 6'6"-6'7" and played 2, 3, and 4 in high school. Again everything is based on reports since I haven't seen him, but I think, like Neisen, he'll be starting by his sophomore year, if not before.
I agree that KB will be the cornerstone of any Bronco success; if he can distribute, cut down the TOs, and be consistent (none of this 30 points followed by 3 for 12 shooting nights), I think he'll be ok. Angley was dominant his sophomore and jr. years in high school; he'll need to be at a higher level at D1 where everyone is going to be be bigger and quicker than the NCS. from what I've read, he'll make the transistion by sheer strengh of will and effort.Rohe's back was apparently a mess last season , which hopefully explained his regression-- I think he'll be solid if healthy. Although KB's success at point is essential, Perkins will be the man next year, the "go to" guy SCU's lacked since BJ.
As to the bigs, Denison will need to win a second straight most improved player award and Niesen has to develop a consistent right hand. Growing a couple inches would be great too. I agree about Borchart looking like a player. He was highly thought of out of high school. Injuries to his feet and shoulders have taken a toll. A CIF ref friend thought he was a likely 3 and a steal when he left Chaminade. That was 20 pounds and a number of surgeries ago. If he couid become healthy and regain his mobility he could be an asset. He has a very good mid range game and moves well without the ball (when he can move).Tibbets showed promise at the end of the season, which hopefuly continues next year.(Of course, I remember thinking the same thing about Von Buchwalt in a WCC tournament game v. USF. That improvement didn't happen). Maybe Parham will contribute in defending big, athletic 4s that have victimized SCU for years and Mbanugo's contributions are likely a season down the road. There are a lot of "hopefullys" and "ifs" here.
I think that given Perkins, Niesen and Denison now have established roles and Perkins was a better player at season's end will lead to a few more wins than last season. As I've opined earlier 18 seems attainable. It'll be fun to talk about.

When it comes to the recruiting game, the combination of size and athleticism makes a compelling prospect. Such is the case with Okey Mbanugo from American High School in Fremont (Calif.). The 6-foot-9 post managed to slip under the radar and now says he will stay close to home and sign with a West Coast Conference school.

nice to know that while our friends in Spokane were talking/joking about a big Nigerian the Broncos found one..

Congratulations to Mr. Mbanugo on the prospects of a fine D1 education both off and on the court. In my years at SCU we had a very impressive Nigerian ... not a basketball player but a truly fine individual ... who almost missed graduation because he had to go back home and get his wife and child out before one of the civil wars there caught up with them ... Louis was (I believe he passed away far too early a few years ago)a wonderful human being and the type of graduate SCU has always been proud about ... I wish the same for Okey ... also nice to know we will continue to have "local" talent on the team ...
