According to Prep West Hoops, "Black is among the best big men in the state of Arizona in the class of 2003. He has a good body, built well, and can play physically. He is limited a bit athletically, and still is developing his offensive skills. He's a smart kid, and works hard, and has the chance to turn himself into a player. He's probably a mid-major prospect". Standard Bronco issue. That website doesn't have him or the Broncos interested in each other any longer. Of Course they also said Angley no longer had interest in SCU, so who really knows?

He does have all the earmarks of a potential Bronco: good attitude, serious work ethic a la Denison and Angley. If he becomes a Bronco, I hope he has a "mean streak". A bit more agressiveness from the frontline would be a good thing. By the way, there's an article at the SCU website lfted from the Santa Clara. Sounds like Doron Perkins is gonna start.

and it is interesting that the name Michael Boone, 7-0 SR C Loma Linda (Calif.) Loma Linda Academy, seems to be linked to SCU reports ...

again sound like an SCU type of player ... and unless he's dead set to play in East Coast semi-obscurity ... SCU would give him a great education ... on the court and off ... probably just as good as those he has been talking to ...

(doesn't sound like a slouch student with Colgate, Navy and Yale)

DD describes the program as a "teaching" program, where player's skill and understanding of the game develop more than with other teams. This is borne out in the improvement in players like the fore-mentioned Vanos as well as Howell, Lopes, Graves and Holmes.The ability to develop players is a great skill to have and a necessary one for most mid majors. That having been said, it would be nice to have a relatively well packaged impact 'big' commit to SCU.Borchart,had he been healthy, might have been; Denison, after a possible red shirt year, might be. While developing players contribute 'down the road" , it's hard for a program to have a confluence of talent to be consitently successful. A injury to a key player (see KB of BJ) can unravel a season.

I'm guessing the Broncos have another LOI out there since they've yet to make an announcement on the website. If that is the case, I hope it's a 'big' who can help sooner than later. I'm not sure there are any more out there. If there isn't, another 'diamond (or at least zirconium) in the rough' will have to do, with the hope that Denison, Angley, Henke et al can 'build' (love those 90's phrases)the program to a consistent prominence.

great observations ....

I liken what has happened at Gonzaga to where SCU was in the Ogden & Awtrey years ...

using Great local talent to make a national splash ... but where GU has been able to capitalize is a continuation beyond that first big team/teams ... actually SCU really went further the first three years but was unable to sustain the momentem ...

the ZAGS now are getting guys who would go to "big time" programs but like perhaps doing it "at home" .... unfortunately Santa Clara has Cal,Stanford in the backyard and USF ... all with tremendous Basketball histories and possibilities ...

SCU for ALL its great academics say they are the BEST academic school for athletes in the Bay Area ... eventhough it may well be the 2nd best in California ...

a tough job ... but not impossible ... SCU has unique attributes that means it's harder to find a young man or woman who is ready to understand why this is a great school with Great programs for serious STUDENT/athletes ...

the big issue is MARKETING ... something SCU as a whole has (at least for the last say 50 years or so) not done very well ... probably only a C on this one ... and until they get that up to a B+ or better I am afraid that will continue

The Nash teams of the early mid- 90's presented a golden opportunity to 'market' the Broncos; they were followed by the promising pre injury BJ teams. It appeared at that time SCU was going be what the Zags have become- a consistently successful program.As I recall, Jones's injury occurred the same year that Lopes actually developed a post up game. Had a healthy Jones played with Lopes,Fast D'oyen & co, the program might have turned the corner. The team still had some great moments,but couldn't recapture 'lightning in the bottle' and consistently capture the bay area's attention. This occurred with Cal and Stanford becoming annual tournament teams, making it harder to compete for the local talent. I guess what I'm blathering about is that the Bay is a tough market and nothing sells in that market like winning. The pieces appear to be there: Leavey is a great venue. The school, while not Cal or Stanford, is a great academic instituion (I would like to see them pass Trinity University in the US News master's College rating tho'). SCU has a respected coach as adept at preparation and X's and O's as anyone. What SCU needs are teams that win consistently, go to the "dance" and get some love from the local media. It's hard to do when you're always waiting for players to develop. One impact player might make a huge difference.
By the way,66, thanks for giving me an opportunity to talk to about this stuff. I hope there are a few more interested Broncos out there.

When I talk about �marketing� it isn�t just the basketball team ... and you are right about getting some love from the �local� press ... the International Mercury-News doesn�t even bother to have a link on its SPORTS website pages to it�s Santa Clara page .... The �argument� is no one is really interested in Santa Clara sports so we don�t really spend much on reporting on it ...

I must say that Fr. L�s move to bring in a Stanford AD and dedicate some money shows some intent. And there have been improvements in the Men�s Water Polo, Tennis, Cross Country and Baseball teams ... Carol�s aim to have SCU a top 25 nationally ranked program in 5 years may not happen but??? it might happen ... Baseball is poised on the brink of making more BUZZ ...

And today that�s it .... BUZZ ... create some buzz and then capitalize on it ... SCU Basketball has got to get a couple of breaks ... perhaps some kid who wants to go to Steve Nash�s school??? Or play in Gonzaga�s league, or ??? then keep it going ... Leavy should help ... would be nice to see it packed ... heck we only had the SJ Civic and had to drive to it

As to having a place to talk about the Broncos ... your right ... and lets hope there is a pickup of intelligent talk AND BUZZ about da Broncos
