There are two keys to Santa Clara's success: Kyle Bailey's back must stay healthy, and the Broncos need to get off to a slow start.

Although the second part is paradoxical, the importance of Bailey is obvious. An all-conference point guard two years ago, Bailey was limited to six games last season because of foot and back problems. His absence was a major reason the Broncos slipped to 4-10 in West Coast Conference play, the first time since 1993-94 the Broncos failed to have a winning conference record.

Even though he had arthroscopic knee surgery in September, Bailey seems fine now.

"He gets a massage on his back every day," Santa Clara coach Dick Davey said, "but I can't do much of anything to rest him, because of our numbers at the point. Right now, Kyle is a 40-minute man, until we can find somebody to help."

If Bailey's back is OK, the Broncos might do better than their predicted sixth-place WCC finish.

"I think we can win 16-18 games if we stay healthy," Davey said. "We're not any bigger, but we have basically everybody back. I think we're a little smarter, and I think we can shoot a little better. And when you make baskets, you look a lot better."

Including Bailey, four starters are back from last season's 13-15 team. Brandon Rohe, a 6-foot-4 guard and the team's leading scorer last season as a freshman, has not practiced much because of a back problem, but should be OK.

Besides Rohe, the Broncos have a couple players who can shoot, namely Ethan Rohde, a 6-5 junior who hit 41.2 percent of his 3-pointers last season, and Scott Dougherty, a 6-5 walk-on redshirt freshman. The other noteworthy newcomer is junior-college transfer Doron Perkins, who, like Bailey, is from Alaska.

The Broncos will not have much size inside, relying on 6-8 center Jim Howell, 6-8 forward Jordan Legge and 6-7 forward Travis Niesen.

"If we can rebound the ball and get something inside offensively, I think we can be OK," Davey said.

Davey needs a turnaround season. He has gone 13-15 the past two seasons after winning 18 or more in six of his previous nine seasons.

"We've had two average-to-poor years, but there has been no mutiny," Davey said.

The best omen for success might be to stumble early. That is almost assured next season, with Mississippi State, Stanford and North Carolina on the schedule. This season, the Broncos might have to work at starting slowly, but that has been their means to success recently.

In the 1998-99 season, they started 4-8 but were 8-6 in conference games and reached the finals of the WCC tournament. In 1999-2000, they began 5-6, but finished with 19 wins and were 9-5 in the conference. In 2000-01, the Broncos started 4-6, but were 10-4 in the WCC and won 20 overall, and in the '01-02 season, they lost eight of their first nine games, but had an 8-6 conference record.

So when they began last season 9-3, they had to figure something was wrong. It was. Santa Clara won only four of its remaining 16 games.
