Santa Clara (10-7, 2-0) didn't give the Waves many opportunities to show off an up-tempo offense that came into the game ranked second in the West Coast Conference in scoring. But despite dictating the pace with their half-court style for most of the game -- and taking all 28 of their free-throw attempts (making 21) in the second half -- the Broncos still nearly managed to let Pepperdine (6-12, 1-2) off the hook.
The Broncos blew a 14-point lead in the first half and nearly let a 10-point advantage evaporate in the final five minutes.
Sports Network Predicted Outcome: Santa Clara 76, Pepperdine 73
These two squads play completely opposite styles of basketball, as the Waves prefer to go up-tempo and the Broncos are much more half-court driven. Expect Santa Clara to control the pace of the game and force Pepperdine into several costly turnovers, as the Waves will not be able to run up and down the court like they normally do.
the computer had SCU a +3 favorite ...

It is so funny to read your post. Let me ask you this question: Should Pepperdine have lost more than 2 games all year? Hell no, that is insane the amount of talent that sits on the bench. If DD had half of those guys, SCU would probably be a top 15 team

hey don't claim to be a hoops wizard ... or even very knowledgable ....
my understanding (from "reliable" sources) is that Pepp just runs a "Pro Style" game ... go to the hot guy and let him take his shot --- if he's not hot or cools off go to the next guy (and they do have lots of guys who can put it up) ... not even a play to diagram on the Coach's chalkboard (or Whiteboard) ....
if DD had the talent the question is would they be willing to play a "team" orientated game??? .... would they need to ??? ....
in all "fairness" to da' Waves ... they have no Senior leadership on the floor ... (or the bench???)
TJ, McGowan, Pinegar, Turner are the JR's (Diawara technically is ... but) Shaun Davis is a 5-11 true Freshman PG and peskier than a pack of angry bees ... but not a floor leader ...
Acker (So.) DNP .... but watching them on TV three times they look about the same --- lots of guys who can put up the points and a couple that can rebound and shoot (hey what else do you want???) ... just that the Broncos put the hurt on them ... (had the Broncs not gone flat from the floor it would not have been that close)
at least from my perspective ....

[> [> [> Never challenging you -- Marlon4Prez, 13:54:12 01/17/04 Sat
I was not making fun of your post at all or calling you an expert...just think it is funny that I am not the only one who sees the "oodles" of talent they have.
I saw that the computre has us losing tonight. What a weird prediciton. Hope we can pull a win off. Right now it does not matter how much we win by, just as long as we get the W.

without those ;) emoticons ... its hard to get the tone of a message ... I never thought you were taking a shot ...
I am a avid, casual, unschooled observer who loves (mostly) to watch the Broncos play ....
and Sat. night was no exception (... sat afternoon was fun too ... but that's another thread)
it was GREAT to see Doron finally hit his 3's ... just in time this team is jelling ... and my only worries were the white thing I saw around his neck at warm-ups -- a brace???
(actually the headband he was sporting for the game ...
(Jedlovec photo)
and the other worry that his steals were going to fall short ... then a couple of nice thefts and fast break points and it was ok ... (heck I didn't even realize he was one off the record ... which he will get)
Kyle seemed to be everywhere on the Defensive boards even beating our Bigs to inside rebounds ....
Travis played another smashing game ... an took a couple of mamouth charges ....
DD started (both halves) with my favorite lineup Howell, Niesen, Rhode, Perkins and Bailey ... and with Legge and Patrick and Rohe and Denison to come off the bench ... that's something !!!!
and Alex Karbo was 1-1 in 1 minute (actually about 30 sec.) ... and looked great making a really tough under-the-basket, in heavy traffic, backside shot ... imagine if he were doing that for 40 ... and it was on a Neuberger assist
it was interesting watching DD substituting Howell in-and-out at the end with the Broncos going to the line (for rebounding vs. potential foul shooting I would guess)
and Jordon was playing without the knee brace ... so I would imagine that's good news ....
and I swear I saw Brandon's steal an inbound by Pepp right after an SCU point ... but I don't see it in the stats ...
and I hope we get somehow to see some more of Scott Dougherty ... he looked good starting in Hawaii ... and had his biggest game against Villanova ... I hope he continues to improve and gets to contribute to the Broncos ultimate success this year ... (and the NEXT 3 !!!) ... my guess is that he is a Nathan Fast / Ethan Rhode kinda guy ... by the time he is a Junior/Senior watch out ...
BTW check below ??? for something special on Mr. Garnett ... the Sicilian Slinger ....
