Subject: Nothing like Ashland memories!

Bill:
Thanks for the added detail. It really takes me back---even before MY time! Actually, my family moved to Ashland from Huntington back in 1960 (my dad worked at Castle Showcase Company, near City Hall, on 17th Street at the floodwall), so all my memories are from 1960 and later. Poage was in its second year that year. I loved you story about how schools would build gymns as soon as you left! I remember the old Oakview School--lots of my classmates at Putnam came from there, and at that time the old building was still around. Same for Hager too. I know they've all been replace by newer buildings now. It's hard to believe that Poage is now over 40 years old, and Paul Blazer is almost that old too---yet their design belies their age. I guess when wood is not the predominant building material, as with the older school buildings, they don't show their age as clearly!

I had no idea there was an earlier version of the Dairy Cheer! I really learned something. I probably saw the old building from time to time but didn't know what it was.

Now that I know your last name, I have to tell you that it's familiar. I never knew any Van Bibbers personally, but I do recall once predominant name at Paul Blazer during the time we lived in Ashland---Scott Van Bibber. Is he related to you? I would imagine he's in his early 50s by now. I'm almost 50, and he was a bit older than me, I believe.

Yes, it would be good to swap stories if we can ever get together. I don't get to Ashland too often but always enjoy driving around my old haunts whenever I do. If you're ever on I-64 driving east into Virginia, stop off at Lewisburg, W.Va., near White Sulphur Springs and only about 15 miles from the Virginia line. I live only about a mile from the interstate. It would be great getting together.

Feel free to share any other memories---maybe between you and me, we'll dust the cobwebs off this discussion forum and stir up a lot more interest!

Best regards,

Jonathan
