I read your posts regularly Mulligan, and I respect your opinions whether I agree with them or not. Because that is all we have, opinions. No-one can ever know what definitively would have happened.
Let me discuss your points. I think that the Winter Dance Party was supposed to be just that. No big orchestras with lavish arrangements, just some pop to dance to. As I understand it, Buddy Holly didn't really want to do it, he just wanted a little green stuff to tide him over. And with a group of good musicians, but not much experience as a band. So in that scenario, I guess any of us would just fall back on what we know best.
His plan after the tour as I understand it was to go back to New York. I think he WAS planning on more Pythian Temple sessions with big orchestras. That wouldn't stop him going back to Lubbock and doing other things as well. I often think of those demos and what they would sound like with a lavish arrangement. Try it.
I'm sure most artistes would go with the trend if the alternative was fading into obscurity.
I'm sure he would have been happy to run his Lubbock studio and produce all manner of artistes alongside his own career. I wouldn't care to speculate as to what he might or might not have achieved. But Lubbock isn't New York or Nashville, is it.
....and finally, I haven't the faintest idea about modern jazz: it's a foreign language to me.
