Hi Mulligan, thanks for sharing your thoughts on Chuck Berry.

I've seen him perform multiple times over the years and there's never been a dull moment when he's on stage.

My first time was on his UK debut in 1964 at the old Finsbury Park Astoria (in North London). Chuck was backed by King-Size Taylor & the Dominos, a fairly mediocre Mersey sound group. He came on resplendent in white suit and he was sensational - duck walk, the full works. The first drama came when he stopped in mid-song to give the backing group instructions. His set included 'No Particular Place To Go' which had recently charted here, and 'Nadine', his current release. The excitement was intense and as things got out of control, management stopped the show - Chuck glowered (he had a very expressive glower) and eventually things came to an end when the safety curtain was lowered.

Carl Perkins was also on the bill making his UK debut and he was excellent (backed by the Nashville Teens).

Another group on the bill were the Animals and we were treated to a pre-release airing of 'House of the Rising Sun', which later became a very big hit for them.

Such times! A really memorable night.

I'll post again soon with my memories of how I saw Chuck get upstaged a few years later by no less then Del Shannon, a wonderful live performer.

The final sentence in your own post says it all!

Mike
