Hi
I wish I had definitive information for you. I don't.
The source for some of the alternate versions and undubbed
(no Picks vocal) takes we have heard came to light
when Norman Petty was promised a new and better royalty rate
if he were to find anything in his vault. Magically, that is what happened. Supposedly, unheard items were found at the end of recording reels.
Another explanation has it that Norman was appalled by the
worn acetate sound quality of Bo Diddley on the "for the first time anywhere" release, and decided to do a vault search on his own. Why he would have waited until the early 1980's to do so makes that story ring hollow.
In other words, it seems likely that everything Norman would have had has been discovered by now.
I keep hoping the other "Bobby Peeples tapes" will surface someday. If they ever are found and were not erased to make room on what in those days was expensive recording tape, we may finally hear tunes like Buddy's mythic cover of "work with me Annie".
T.V. and Radio appearances that are gone, like American Bandstand, and any visuals to go with the Alan Freed interview, likewise seem to be lost forever.
It seems to me that there was a goofy report of a tape that was sent to maria Elaina about 5 years ago, supposedly of "never heard" material. Obviously, that must have been a
simple copy, probably from bootleg, of already known items,
or we all would have heard it by now.
Having said all that, it would sure be nice if every fan or tech person that ever saw or worked with Holly would do one more search of their files! After all, it took a very long time for the photo's from Clear Lake to be found and shared.
