CD是個瓶頸位置，每間公司只須要一位ECD或兩位聯合ECD。換句話說，不是每位CD也會變成ECD。ECD與CD實際上是兩個不同類型的工作，不是每位CD也適合的。那麼其餘的CD去路又如何呢？在香港，有十五年年資而不是ECD的CD已經絕無僅有了。不少CD到了某個階段已經轉行了，當中不少是轉為供應商，例如導演就最常見。導演的生命力較強，四五十歲仍叱吒風雲的大有人在，是一個長遠的投資。但四五十歲仍在創作部的已經少得很，仍未做ECD的就更加少見。近年，由於經濟不景，大公司負擔太重難以生存，不少廣告人或因看準時機，或因被裁員，都紛紛自立門戶。這類小型廣告公司在國內可能更普遍，因為只要在大公司作CD一段日子，與客戶建立了好關係，只要有一兩個大客戶在手，就足夠養活大家，作其老闆了。所以，CD這個職位往往就是廣告創作人的終點站，也是另一階段的開始。CD不可以只看眼前，無論你現在如何風光，你也應該早作打算，你未來的發展如何呢？你適合作ECD嗎？你適合作導演嗎？你適合自資作老闆嗎？這些問題你不可不想，因為無論你走哪一條路，今天就要好好安排。
