Hello Bessie: Yes, I do believe you are entitled to being paid for this week while the family is away! I mentioned this earlier, but if your employers are choosing to go away for their personal vacation, then they should "keep you on payroll" and give you your regular salary! If they are not going to be home for you to care for the little ones, this is no fault of your own..

But, one of your concerns is how to ask for compensation for the week w/o children.. you also mention that you don't want to add any tension to your working relationship.

If the family did not leave you a paycheck for this week ending the 17th, then on Monday when you return, you might ask them if they forgot to leave you a paycheck. If they look at you kind of wierd, then you can say that you "understoond" that compensation would be given to you when the family left for vacation.

If the family is as warm and supportive as you say they are, then I do not believe tension will be there. Instead, the fact that you are inquiring will help them to understand that communication is important. Not only that, by paying you for the week, the employer's know, that their Nanny will "be there" when they return from vacation, ready and willing to get right back on schedule and routine with the kids ..

I don't know if you have this Bessie: But this bit of information ((about compensation for family vacations, etc.) should be stated in your contract! If this is not written in, or if you do not have a contract, NOW is the time to get one implemented. This is very important ((as you can now see in hindsight))

So Bessie, what do you think? When a family goes on vacation, and the Nanny does not care for her charges during that time, should she be paid/compensated? The answer is: YES! The Nanny should be compensated/paid for her wages. I hope this helps.

I'd be interested to see, if someone else will have a comment on this common misunderstanding....
