i would like to thank and congratulate everyone who was involved in the planning of the first Dugong CYF USA Camp at Camp Wrightwood - Lorraine, Ted & kids, Imelda & Nick, Elsie & Dante, and Vickie & Bonnie. it was really a job well done.
after more than 30 years (that's more than a generation), it felt good to be in a CYF camp again. i just noticed some differences and i would like to mention some of them.
- i remember sleeping on rocky, uneven ground under old and torn tents in the past. but at Camp Wrightwood, we slept in cabins complete with bunkbeds, indoor plumbing and even a heater.
- i remember our food - balatong, karing, and galunggong being the favorites. we still had balatong and karing at Camp Wrightwood but there were a lot more (food that really increase your cholesterol). at the end of the camp, there were a lot of leftovers to bring home. until now, i am still trying to finish 2 bags of cheetos.
- i remember eating under the trees, sitting on rocks. At Camp Wrightwood, we ate in a mess hall that has a kitchen equipped with all the appliances that a chef (Dante) needs. we didn't have to look for firewoods. we used disposable plates, forks and spoons so we didn't have to wash a lot of dishes. it's good but we lost a chance to bond with each other some more.
- i remember going behind the bushes to relieve myself and taking a dip in the river to bathe. at Camp Wrightwood, there was a toilet and a shower with hot water in each cabin. there was also a large swimming pool.
- i remember hiking to the hillsides for our treasure hunting. at Camp Wrightwood, the younger guys did their treasure hunting at Albertson, the town's grocery.
am i complaining? absolutely NOT. at my age, i appreciate every comfort that i can get. none of what i mentioned above diminished the spirit of the camp. the same CYF spirit that i knew was present the whole time.
i am very thankful to spend some time with good friends (actually, more like family members). i spent about 2 days with them but i'm sure the frienship that we have will last forever.
SEE YOU IN 2005.
steve
