Subject: I have to ask because I'm really lost

I know this might sound odd, but I really have to ask this question. What makes somone "Goth" as opposed to someone who just wears black all the time or a poser?
I've actually been wondering for the last two years after I went to a concert in L.A. and a paster said I was the weakest goth he had ever seen. To be honest though, I know I'm not the real thing, I don't even qualify as a poser. I usually look like Joey Ramone and I don't know anything about the goth scene other than what I read here.
Infact it was a friend of mine who suggested I start posting here to meet new people. I also thought it would be a good idea because my fince is going to be moving here soon from Romania and she loves places like Futureshockk, so I wanted to kind of get involved. I also didn't want people to look at me and wonder what the hell I'm doing here.
So if anyone is willing to answer without making me look like a bigger jack ass than I am I'd be very greatful.
