oh that question... to be honest i dont think it can be answered. there are so many genres and sub genres and levels of interest that it would be hard to say what the defining attribute to a goth is. i think that there is waaaaay to much mystique regarding gothdom. could you consider Edgar Allan Poe, Mary Shelly or Lord Byron goths? well YEAH! and that was 150-200 years before Bauhaus and the Sisters of Mercy! there are roll players, club kids, weekend goths, historical & literary fans, music enthusiasts and the list goes on and on. so just think of it like this. if you are into Reggae, dreadlocks, hemp clothes and smoking out then you more than likely would be perceived as and could be considered a Rastafarian. if you are into wrangler jeans, boots, cowboy hats and giant belt buckles then you would be pretty close to fitting in with the cowboys, even if you dont own a horse or heard cattle. into black, the Cure, cemeteries like goth type junk then.... get the picture? but who fucking cares about titles or definition. i could easily claim that i was the most gothic person in Fresno and most would agree, but you wont ever hear me say that because it isnt true. im so not into the mainstream goth crowd stuff, but more into antiquity and necromancy. young girls of the 19th century swooned over "gothic" novels by Mary Shelly & Lord Byron, so even way back in the 1800's there were goths. how can you define something that spans all time and space? but if it has a certain feel, yes it could very well be something gothic. however you shouldnt need to label yourself. the ONLY reason our website is called fresnogoth is to give people a focus and to be as specific as possible. but we appeal to all sorts of genres like industrial, glam, new wave & deathrock. so if people want to call you goth let them, i however think its stupid to call ones self goth, thats just my opinion.

and your pastor friend. he has a weak tongue. tell him to hold it next time he decides to open his mouth.
