Subject: Willy Wonka remake
In reply to: The Rhino 's message, "Re-make, yes." on 01:00:30 09/18/03 Thu

Alrighty then, I don't normally have a problem with remakes. I love movies and more power to the people who think they can improve on a film. That being said, Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory should remain as is.

Watch the film now, the only engaging thing about it is Wilder's Wonka. I don't know how the guy did it, but he managed to convey the feeling that he loved and hated kids at the same time. Wilder had a twinkle in his eye that said I'll hand you a lollipop in this hand while shoving this blade into your backside. Still, the film is as square as a card table and it looks as fake as all get-out. But that's the charm!

But I guess if they're going to improve on it, make the spoiled brat Veruca Salt a little older and put her in a nice schoolgirl outfit. Ah, I digress.

Depp showed he could camp it up and play for laughs nicely in the Pirates movie, but trying to fill Wilder's shoes here might be too much to ask. Just because Ed Norton does calm crazy well, doesn't mean he's going to be the lead in a new One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest.

Color me crazy, but maybe Tim Burton ain't the right cat for this litter box. Seriously, what's the last good film the guy's been involved with? Edward Scissorhands? Plus, he's already shown he can be clumsy with remakes - Planet of the Apes. Personally, I think the guy peaked and he's been indulging himself in pet projects like the dreadful Nightmare Before Christmas and IFC fodder such as Ed Wood.
