It's possible the noise you heard was the Bendix drive( the little gear that engages to the flywheel) in the starter staying engaged and hitting the flywheel. This would explain noise than no noise then no start. Replacing the starter is not that hard. I'd try tightening the bolts to the converter too, but I doubt that is where you problem lies they just don't pop out one day and then go away the next. I've been wrong before though.

He got it started. I've been talking to him on AIM. The thing now is that he says it's making an aweful screeching noise. Even though those shields are extremely thin, do you think it's possible that without it something is rubbing?
I told him to check and see if anything appeared shiny like it had been rubbing somewhere.
Any ideas?
Tony

If that shield is off it shouldn't make a difference. If he pryed on the shield between the bellhousing and the engine than it verywell could be rubbing. There should be plenty of clearence unless the starter or a shield is missaligned.

He's got it now. The bellhousing bolts were still loose!!??
He tightened them up and it quieted down. Now he says he's having a problem with it trying to take off from a stop in third occasionally (a413). Valvebody? Governor? Low line pressure? Any ideas?
Tony
