You could get away with making it so that you don't need to weld. I guess the only reason I really want it is to get a nice polished finish. In all practicality steel is probably better than aluminum in the long run because it has a higher endurance limit (won't fatigue as easily), and both would probably be the same weight to provide the same given strength.
