"Do you know who Aurie is?" Auron asked Yuna. She shook her head slowly, confused.
"How would I?" she asked. "It's not like we've met him before."
"In a sense, yes, you have." Auron paused. "Aurie is me."
Yuna put a hand over her mouth in surprise. "What? How... how can it be?"
"The symbol on the tree," he said. "Do you know what that is?"
Yuna shook her head slowly. "No..."
"It's called..." Auron screwed up his eyes, trying to remember. "the slyvan tyriavn. Literally, soul harness."
"What does it do?" Yuna asked.
"I was just getting to that. Not much is known about it, but... I know this much. It takes a part of the person who touches it, making it into a human form. Or... whatever race the thing may be." Auron paused. "In my case, it took me and gave the younger me life in a different body."
"So... so Aurie will grow up in this time, too?"
Auron shook his head. "No. If he doesn't go back, neither he nor I will exist. We will disappear."
"But... but how can that be?"
Auron shrugged. "Don't ask me. I don't know everything, you know."
"Can the... what was it you called it?... slyvan tyriavn ...do anything else?" Rikku asked hestantly.
"It is said that it can transport people through places and time," Auron said. "But I don't know if it's entirely true."
They sat in a long silence.
--
Aurie was on his feet. "Why does everyone tell me to go back?" he yelled. "Who cares what happens? Why don't they think about what I want for once? Don't you care about my happiness?"
Zidane stared at him, abashed. "Look, Aurie. We care. There's just... so much more at stake here than you just wanting Yuna to be your mom."
"I never said that!" Aurie interrupted.
"It's obvious it's true, though."
Aurie stared sullenly at the ground. He didn't want to admit it, but Zidane was right. "You'd know why," he said abruptly, "if you had my... mom." He choked on the word.
Zidane sighed. "Look, Aurie. I know what it's like to not have a mom. I never had one in the first place, unlike you."
Aurie looked up. "What do you mean?"
"We can save our life stories for later," Mikoto cut in. "We need to move--and now."
