Auron stood frozen to the spot, staring at his younger self. "This is why I gathered you here," he said softly. "I knew it was the right time."
"What?" Tidus asked, confused. "You mean... you just wanted us to see you as a kid?"
Little Auron looked confused. "What... what are you guys talking about?" he asked Yuna timidly.
"Oh..." Yuna looked at Auron over his past self's head. He shook his head curtly. "Nothing."
"Are you sure?" he said, narrowing his eyes.
Yuna smiled. "Yes, I am sure." She got down on her knee so she could look him straight in the eye. "Are you hungry?"
"Yeah..."
"Let's make you some food then. It's almost time for lunch, anyway."
--
They all sat around the campfire. No one said anything except for Yuna and the Auron of the past. Surprisingly, Auron used to be a talkative little bugger.
Everyone was nearly asleep when the Auron of today walked away from the campsite. Rikku, who was a very light sleeper, saw him leaving. She quietly got up and followed him.
"What are you doing, Auron?" Rikku whispered once she caught up to him.
Auron avoided her eyes. "I... I remember this," he said slowly.
"You what?" Rikku stared at him disbelievingly. "You're kidding, right?"
Auron slowly shook his head. "No. I wish I was."
"How do I know you're telling the truth?" she asked.
Auron took a deep breath. "Look," he said at last. "Tomorrow morning, Yuna's going to start calling me Aurie. If she doesn't... you know that I'm not telling the truth."
Rikku eyed Auron carefully. For the first time in her life, Rikku was seeing him look uncomfortable. Maybe he is telling the truth, she thought. Stranger things have happened. She finally nodded. "Okay. I'll believe you if Yunie starts calling... you... Aurie." She began to walk away.
"Rikku, wait!" Auron said. She turned around and looked at him expectingly. "Don't... don't tell anyone about what I just told you, okay? Even if it is true, they mustn't know."
Rikku nodded, and went back to the campsite.
