Subject: The thing about Buffy, I would say (r)

It's not just that LFN had a strong female protagonist, which of course it did, as did Buffy. But the *male* characters on LFN are not your typical slash fodder. There's Michael, but then there's Walter and Operations, gentlemen of a certain age, and Birkoff, of a certain age in the other direction. Buffy had a larger cast overall, with more recurring characters. So if you went looking for slash fodder, you have Xander, Spike, Angel, and Oz, and possibly Giles.

For the sake of brainstorming, what other fandoms are there that have a large online presence, but not much slash? Xena, obviously. Again, aside from the fact that Xena/Gabrielle was practically canon, not a whole lot of regular male characters. X-Files has Mulder/Krycek and Mulder/Skinner, but probably equal amounts of Mulder/Scully. I'd guess that Firefly probably also has equal amounts of het and slash out there, and their cast was 9 people, 5 men and 4 women.

Alias, maybe. Lots of Sydney-centric fic out there. Farscape -- piles and piles of John/Aeryn, and not a whole lot of slash.

So my vote, and this is coming from someone who reads and writes at least 50% slash (probably more these days, thanks to Stargate: Atlantis), is that the biggest obstacle to m/m slash in a fandom is the lack of a viable partner for the generally beloved male character.

I would say that this is not necessarily true for f/f slash, and I think that's what some of the LJ discussion is getting at, although most of those posts are such a pile of wank that it's hard to tease out meaningful points. So if lack of viable slash pairings isn't the issue, what is?
