Hi! I'd just like to add that there is a secondary meaning of "cut-and-dried" as it refers to soemthing lacking interest or suspense, routine, dull. "The lecture was cut-and-dried, leaving the students feeling bored and disinterested." I'm guessing it's a botanical reference to flower-arranging. Once the flowers have been cut and dried, there is nothing further to do but put them in a vase. I'd be curious to hear whether any of the other esteemed experts has a definitive derivation for this term.
